Bizarre Detuned audio in a WSX playlist |
|
|
I am having a really bizarre problem with a Windows Media embed in Internet
Explorer
I have a wsx file in Windows Media Server that plays an advert and then the
requested movie.
My advert plays fine but the requested movie plays back with detuned audio.
And, this ONLYoccurs with Internet Explorer on the PC.
I DO NOT have the problem in Firefox or playing the movie directly in
Windows Media Player
here is the url of the movie:
http://www.ggl.com/christmas_view.php?MediaId=1843
here is the wsx file on windows media server
<?wsx version="1.0"?>
<smil>
<media src="C:\wmpub\WMRoot\zboardad.wmv" dur="" noSkip="TRUE"
role="Advertisement"/>
<media src="%requestedUrl%"/>
</smil>
the advertisment runs at 182 kbits/s
the movies run at around 218 kbit/s
I am pretty stump on this one...and ANY help is greatly appretiated

No, it doesn't. I think the "effect" is intended : The absurdly low
voice seems to be a deliberate attempt to outdo those movie trailers
for rambo style action movies ;-))

My experience is the voiceover is ridiculoulsy deep (wheras the music
is standard axe guitar stuff). I can replicate this using WM7 in IE6,
WM6.4 in Firefox, WM9 in IE6 and WM9 in Firefox.
I can also confirm the sound is the same when connecting directly to
the Christmas_in_Japan.wmv playlist using the player outside a browser
window. Badly encoded, but the same.
Perhaps if you can provide a direct link to the ad for comparison
purposes ?

No :)
the ad has an extremely low and cheesy voice which is unfortunately intended
The movies that come after the advert are the main concern as they the audio
is playing at half speed while the video plays fine...
All of the movies on this page exhibit this 'detuned' behavior in Internet
Explorer on about 50% of the PC. To recap, Firefox and Windows Media Player
do not exihibt this behavior.
here are all the movies on this page:
scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see some movie thumbnails..
http://www.ggl.com/christmas.php
here is an mms address to the advert...
mms://video.ggl.com/Ads/zboardad.wmv
Should I call into Microsoft support on this one ?
I googled this bug and found nothing :(

Then, sorry I'm not able to replicate your main clip experience here
using the browser combo-moves detailed previously ! Are you getting
user complaints or is it simply one of your machines doesn't play it
"right" ? Move to another machine for testing. Even, go round a
friends house for a mince pie and bubbly, and test it there.

I'm afraid without hearing the original audio it's impossible to tell.
But as far as "sleigh bells" go, they were at normal pitch as was the
rapping. I'd suspect your test machine and try another which is
"cleaner" - it's quite possible you've done so much testing on the
machine you're trying this on that it's somehow become "a dud".

I don't know if we've established it's a bug yet, so save your money
till we can work out what's different between my testing experience
and yours ... if it's any help I'd sleep soundly tonight.
Have good christmas break,
Cheers - Neil |

Well, I figured it out...
On certain PC's using IE, in the .wsx file, if the first video is in mono
and the second video is in stereo....
The second video will play detuned audio but regular video.
bizarre but true
