Hello,

I've been converting some DV AVI files to WMV for online use. I've
noticed that both my source AVI files and the converted WMV files seem
to look a bit washed out compared to how they look in other programs.
Being a video guy, it looks like WMPs black level is not correct.

I wouldn't think much of it, but I've come across WMV video that does
not exhibit this problem. For example, the videos at Gamespot.com.

http://www.gamespot.com/live/stream_asx.html?
speed=700&path=warhammermoc_ot_pc_100505.asx&playall=0&push=0&prestre
am=&first=1133282187

(copy whole link w/o line breaks)

This clip starts in complete black. My definition of complete black
for these tests is the black matte around the video in WMP. I can not,
for the life of me, get complete black out of my video. I know NTSC
isn't as dymanic as what a computer monitor can handle, but how can the
people at GameSpot do it? All my video's blacks are chalky grey, with
less contrast than expected.

Please help.

this is a difference in black levels between TV and computer monitors. you
can use Avisynth and the following command to map them:

ColorYUV(levels="TV->PC")

http://www.avisynth.org/ColorYUV
