Please help! I'm trying to learn Russian and Ukrainian. I sometims go online
to watch Russian TV online. BUT whenever I watch, it usually goes very slowly
and the pictures don't move. Sometimes, the same image could remain on the
screen for more than 5 minutes! Also, sometimes, the sound stops for a bit
and then starts up again. This can get really annoying and frustrating!! For
one channel, it says that the online viewing will work with a minimum speed
of 240 kb/second. What does this mean? And also, what am I doing wrong?
Please send me a reply to vikulya838@yahoo.com Thanks!

ROFL.

240 KB/s (KByte/s) or KBit/s? Anyway, this is about _bandwidth_ and if your
internet connection doesn't meet this _bandwidth_ requirement, it will
result on not being able to stream data with a big overhead of
prebuffering.

One should assume that you'd know what bandwidth is, you're paying for it.

Stupid questions and, even worse, total disrespect of Usenet's social
rules, just like this:

"I have a question: ...! I don't actually care for the answer, so send it

Wow, Sebastian...you obviously weren't taught your manners. It was a simple
question that I asked. I, however, did not ask for your attitude. "Thank
you", I suppose, but because of your rudeness, I'm not sure if a thank you is
needed. If I am not a computer genius, that doesn't mean that you should call
my question "stupid" and tell me that I'm disrespecting "Usenet's social
rules". How about you disrespecting me? And I didn't ask for your attention,
as I don't need it. I asked for HELP. If you do not understand the meaning of
this word, please, look it up. And what is that supposed to mean? "You
because you ask for it"? Yes, I did ask for help. WOW! I guess that me asking
for help is taboo, right? People need help, okay? So if you could stop
disrespecting me, as I asked a simple question. I did not ask for your help
in particular, so if my question angered you...well, then why did you answer
it? So maybe next time, you could show people some respect. Thanks.

That's the normal purpose of newsgroups these days - peer support. If
you don't like it you're welcome to find somewhere else to hang out -
the rest of us can carry on helping users without your intervention
being required. Calling people 'stupid' for asking basic support

If you *know* you have broadband internet connection, with a speed
faster than 240kbps (ask your service provider or check your contract)
then media player may not be detecting your available speed correctly.

To check this, go to the media player program menu.

Choose Tools -> Options -> Performance

If "detect connection speed" is selected, try to select "choose
connection speed" and set it to DSL/Cable (384kbps) or DSL/Cable
(768kbps). Close and restart the player and try again.

If it continues not to work, either your connection is unable to
receive data at the chosen rate, or the russian server is unable to
send data at the rate (240kbps) needed to play the video smoothly.

It's also possible something between you and the russian server is
unable to pass through the data at a stable high speed - there's
unfortunately nothing much you can do in that case.

An error in writing. Skip the first "you".

No, it's quite usual to expect help. That's why explicit attention makers

("BUT") are a sign of selfishness.

Thanks for trying Neil! :) But it doesn't show the picture anymore. I have
AOL 9.0 dial-up and WMP 10, if that makes any difference. Anyways, I did the
"connection speed" thing and now I don't get a picture, although I hear
everything perfectly and clearly. I'm actually Ukrainian, but have been
forgetting the language a bit, but one of my friends speaks Ukrainian and she
watches the TV channel on her computer. Is there anything I can do?

Incorrect. The microsoft.bla stub of newsgroups is intended for peer
support. Go, hang out on the xml newsgroup for a bit and ask a
question you don't know the answer to. You will get first class peer
support rather than a flaming. Try it, you might like it.

It's perfectly reasonable to do so in a posting body
[Ref : http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#bespecific]

You're confusing your very slender understanding of newsgroup
etiquette with posting a "Help Me!!!!!" as a subject line, which is
uninformative and generally correctly elicits the sort of reply you
posted.

Yes, it does. I'm afraid you're out of luck - you cannot play live
video (240 kbps) down a dialup pipe (often about 40kbps or less)

Your only option is to use a download manager or right-click the link
and choose "Save-As", save the file not in realtime, then watch it
when it's all downloaded. Or, upgrade to ADSL/Broadband cable ?

Not really - it depends where you live !!! I'm in the UK and Telewest
usually seem quite good. NTL are apparently rubbish. Most of the
broadband providers here are in an "arms war" and keep bumping up
their data rates for download, while keeping the prices the same.
Which is a good thing (c)

I occasionally watch Channel One from Russia, which uses WMP. When you
go to the home page, http://www.1tv.ru/ , and click on "on-line",
another window will open, and the main streaming program will start.
Normally, the video stream is transmitted for about 20 or 22 hours
daily. Ordinarily, if the server is busy, or the station is off the
air, it may seem like nothing is happening, but if you right-click on
the blue "TV screen", and click on "error details'' you will get one
of two error messages: either "Windows Media Player cannot find the
specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the
file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where
the file is stored is offline," or "server busy", when too many
people are trying to connect to the server. When I get the latter
message, I just keep trying to reconnect, and in a few minutes
I usually manage to get in, as other users disconnect.
However, I have been unable to connect to the main streaming program
for a while now, and have no information as to why. I just get the
"file does not exist, or computer off the air" error message. It is
still possible to view short news clips from the site, but the main
video stream seems to be off the air for now. For a student of
Russian, the short video clips of news stories, usually about 2
minutes long, are useful, because you can simultaneously view the
video and the text of what is being read by the announcer.
The video and audio quality was quite good. My only complaint would be
that many programs on the station are programs and films originally in
English, and dubbed into Russian. The Russian dubbing seems to be
dubbed over the original English, which you can hear in the
background, and this can be very distracting.
