I am operating my Powerbook G4 with OSX 10.3.4 and am running consistently
into this problem: When opening a website that contains a Œwmv¹ file the
media player WMP 9 opens but does not play the video clips. Instead it
offers the error message ³The request is not valid in current state² without
further explanation or link to some sort of help site. Incidentally, I
have no problem viewing the clips including hearing the embedded audio using
my PC. This is frustrating to say the least. I have checked some of the
recent conversation in this newsgroup but can¹t find any leads.

Can anybody help or give directions where to go for help?
Is there any Tiger compatible media player on the market that can handle
these wmv files reliably? I can¹t imagine that Apple wants anybody to
switch back to Windows PCs?

You can check the FAQ for some workarounds...
On MacOS X, Flip4Mac makes a QuickTIme codec that supports wmv
(shareware) unfortunately they don;t support all formats and they have
their share of problems as well.
VLC is apparently working on an internet plug-in for their version
0.8.5. If we're lucky, it'll allow us to use their app instead of WMP
for the codecs they support...

Corentin,

Your response is not encouraging. I better keep my PC around.
Thank you anyway, you saved me from further frustration.

I know. Many codecs are not supported, DRM support is embryonic and the
application is plagued with many invalidating bugs... I suspect that
most of the missing formats are not public and that's why we don;t have
any other app offering to support them. Flip4Mac mentioned a while backj
that they are working on additional formats and DRM, but nothing came
out so far (and they too have bugs - and I'm not sure I like the tone
and information provided by their online technical support :-\ - but at
least they have one :-> ).

Corentin,

Unfortunately I don't have the time and patience to experiment with new
offerings until I hear better commentary.
Thank You!

I wouldn't bother much with any WMV codecs that cannot be read on the

Mac. A waste of time and certainly not worth going to a PC for.
