Problem: Only music files won't play but other file types d |
|

When using Windows media player to play mp3s on a CD, only the first 6
seconds play then it stops. Same with any cd I try.9 The same cds contain
text files and those open fine.) All Windows updates and Media player
updates have been performed. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Oh,
and I tried a different CD rom drive with no difference.

If you copy those MP3 files to your HDD do you experience the same problem? |

CORRECTION:
The files CANNOT be copied to the hard drive as it will just lock up after
a few seconds. So there are really two problems.

It sounds like a defective CD. |

That's what I thought at first, but it's with any and all cds. And a
different cd-rom drive doesn't solve it. I'm thinking along the lines of
software problems but don't know where to start.

Ah a missing bit of vital info!

Is it just data CDs (since you mentioned text files) or music CDs too?
Do they work in other computers? |

Yes, the mp3s play in other computers. Cds with files OTHER than mp3s have
no problems on this pc. It's specifically a music file type issue. If it
was the cd-rom then I shouldn't be able to open or copy ANY files, so it's
odd that when attempting to copy mp3s to the hard drive it locks up, or when
playing the mp3s directly from the cd it will start (brand of media player
doesn't matter), play for about 6 seconds, then stop. No errors, nothing
else happens.
