Lost Access to 200 WMA files!! |
|
|
Using MusicMatch media player, but problem is a DRM one.
problem started when I tried to download a new track; it fails at
the end; but now all tracks lost access; Windows Media Player 9.0
refuses to backup the DRM keys with unknown error;
DRM files are intact at the time of the first error;
- Do you receive any kind of error message? If so, what is the exact
text of the error message?
All messages are provided below. There are two cases. Trying to play
existing music: the "c00d0bbe" error code. Trying to download purchased
music: DLS_ERR_PRE_LICENSE: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Retries fail.
I suspect the "c00d0bbe" error code is an undocumented Microsoft one.
- Are you trying to play the track on the same PC to which it was
downloaded?
Yes.
- Are you logged into your Musicmatch Downloads account when you attempt
to play the track?
Yes.
- Have you ever successfully played the track? If so, have you made any
changes to your system since successfully playing the track last?
Yes for all previously purchased tracks.
- Have you performed a system restore or OS upgrade since purchasing the
track?
No.
- Please attempt to play the track in Windows Media Player (WMP). Are
you able to play the track successfully with WMP?
No. Error message: "Windows Media Player has encountered an unknown error."
Running version 9 of Media Player.

Flatten and rebuild your Windows installation, try to reimport your keys.
If that doesn't work either, I can just add a second, even louder

That response was not helpful. Can anyone do better? How to fix DRM
corruption cases when the end-user is not at fault? Re-installing Windows is
not an acceptable answer.

You might try the drm_reset.exe from http://www.napster.com first. But,
much likely, you simply will end up reinstalling Windows. And/or having
lost your files.

See above.
However, by using DRM, it is your fault. You agreed to be frauded and
didn't complain.

Do you think so? Then write an eMail to Microsoft. Most likely they
won't care, or they'll tell you that it's supposed to be like that - DRM
would break down even much easier when it was not the heavily coupled
with the rest of the system. |

I am sorry you are so down on Microsoft. Your suggestion did not help. I
lost money and a lot of time. I am penalized for being honest and never
downloading illegal music. I did not agree to be frauded.
MusicMatch never provided a way to backup music licenses. WMP does, but I
am not sure how well that normally works. It failed for me.
Apparently the DRM architecture is wrong and stupid. This is typical.
There is a way to fix the DRM architecture to be more fool proof and make
both customers and the recording industry more happy. But I won't reveal the
new architecture details since I won't get paid for it. I think I will look
into getting a patent on it instead. |

It's good to live in a country where downloading via P2P is treaten as
good Fair Use. :-P

Well, you did. You'd better read the terms of agreement, especially
those about your DRM software.
| If the WM-DRM Software's security has been compromised, owners of
| Secure Content ('Secure Content Owners') may request that Microsoft
| revoke the WM-DRM Software's right to copy, display and/or play
| Secure Content. [...] Microsoft may, in conjunction with such license,
| also download revocation lists onto your computer on behalf of Secure
| Content Owners.
Any invalid state (even due to simple random errors) are such a state of
compromisement.

See above.
License files are bound to individualized versions of the DRM software.
If it's broken, so the license files are.

There is no way to fix DRM architecture. Either it's trivial to break,
or it's pedantic as hell and running inside a pure non-universal virtual
machine, e.g. TCPA.
As the recording industry has gone totally mad anyway, there's no way to
make them happier with fooling the customers even more.

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster that such a nonsense isn't applicable
in Europe.
Anyway, my recommendation is a non-enforcing pseudo-DRM system based on
metadata, signatures and a promotion system, paraphized in two typical
sentences you'd hear:
"Tooltip: You've copyied this file to CD more than X times. According to
the jurisdication of your country (as assumed by your locale
settings), this might be beyond the limitations of Fair Use legislation.
[OK] [Cancel] [More Information]"
"Found X of Y files to be signed by Company XYZ. We're proud to offer
you (special prize on something)." |
