Some days ago I installed the SP2 and WMP10 on my XP Professional
(Italian version).
Then I had some problems with other installations so that I needed to
restore a windows previous state (but at a point AFTER the SP2) and I
noticed I had no WMP available in the system.

Now Windows Update ask me again for updating XP with WMP10 but after
extracting the files I receive an error message that translated from
Italian is:

----------------------------------
WINDOWS MEDIA TECHNOLOGY
This version of Windows Media Technologies is not compatible to the
Windows version in use.
----------------------------------

I tried everything, from download directly the setup package, to install
previous versions of WMP (9 and then even 7.1).

Even Real player, when tries to update its components, gives me the same
error with the same window, so that it seems to be a System Error.

I tried even to reinstall the SP2!

Nothing worked.
This means that I have no Video player available (not even PowerDVD
works, I think because it's use the same DLLs as WMP does).

Of course, the only possibility is now... reinstall all XP Pro, and I
wouldn't do that!

Many thanks for your help,
William

Have you tried being sure you:
1. Remove WMP and restarting before you install?
2. Turmning off anti-virus during the install?

I think what I would do is:
1. Remove WMP
2. Backup and edit the Registry for anyting to do with WMP. Do
this ONLY if you are comfotable working with regedit or it could
cause more serious problems.
3. Install WMP9.

If still no joy,
I would try a Repair (NOT restore) install of XP (and by
necessity SP2).

Remove WMP again. No Registry work to do this time.
Put the XP CD in the drive, boot from it, and work your way thru
to the second opportunity to press "R", which will be the
"Repair", and use that. You will not lose any data of any kind,
but you will lose your Restore Points.
Reapply SP2
Get the SP2 update from MS
and then install WMP9 and see what happens.

I have a feeling that will take care of it.

XP Pro has an installation repair function on the CD. If you use that you
can retain your desktop setting and documents on the harddrive. You really
wont be loosing much except the SP2 will have to be re-installed.

It is not possible to get this error unless files have been deleted or
corrupted on your system... =\

What is the file version on c:\windows\system32\wmploc.dll and c:\program
files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe?

See http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
Following up to your post with the resolution is good netiquette.
