Playing videos from web sites in IE6 usually works fine, but on some
occasions a small window opens for playing, but does not play anything, and
its usual WMP9 buttons are dead.

Same problem in NS7.

Under Windows 2000.

Any ideas why and a solution?

1) They probably broke their HTML code used in the popup. If it's not
a popup, describe where this small window appears. Maybe left hand bar
in IE ?
2) Other than contacting the site webmaster, no. Get them to fix their
code.
3) I'm not telepathic. You may be. Provide web addresses to replicate
the problem.

No popup. In the middle of the browser screen.

My girlfriend in romania running the same 2000 and browser plays it just
fine. If there was the code, it wouldnt.

http://www.guzer.com/

All videos on this page.

So let's try the first one : If you look at the video 'US marines
blah', the URL for the video is

http://media1.guzer.com/videos/fallujah_fighting.wmv

When you go to media player (standalone) and go to the File->Open URL
menu, can you play the video then ? If not, it's probably a broken
MPEG4 codec.

The file says it's encoded with "Windows Media MPEG-4 Video V3" and
some systems it's broken by installing other software or 3rd party
codec packs. If that's the case, let's assume it needs fixing : Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
and grab the top-listed codec package for your system (XP or 2000).

Close all browsers and media player, install the package and return to
the site. If that was the cause, it should now be fixed.

When I click on the links I do not get a WMV extension, but a PHP extension.
But if I type the WMV address into IE, the video plays.

I've already done that and thats not the problem.

BTW, when I try to answer to you from IE, the Reply popup window does not
come up and I get javascript: fnNewReply() error. It works in NS7. I always
have problems like this with Java in IE? Why?

Sorry, I wasn't too clear : The php page *contains* code which points
to the video - and that's the address I posted above (I ripped it from
the page).

OK well - the only other solution I can think is that you're probably
seeing the 6.4 player version (it looks different than the player 9
version), and this is because they've used the old embedding code for
6.4 to place the player in the webpage, not the more recent (5-6 year
old) embedding code which should now be used.

In most cases, you should see player 9 but let's try this : Now grab
from the same page you were at before, the "Codec Installation Package
for Windows Media Player 6.4" and try that.

It should update the 6.4 player which is *also* on your system (it
sits side-by-side with the version 9 player but doesn't "get out
much")

That ought to add MPEG-4 version 2 to the 6.4 player. If it still
doesn't work I can't think of anything else you can do.

I don't know - I'm not telepathic, so I can't see what you're seeing.

If you're using a web interface to the newsgroups, it's not ideal
especially if MS web team wrote the web interface. So you should use a
proper newsgroup reader to fix this - I use 'free agent' but Firefox
has a good email/newsgroup reader too called 'Thunderbird'
