hey all, my internet explorer keeps freezing up whenever I try to play videos
via windows media player. I have tried installing a new version of WMP, but
that didn't help. It's very frustrating at this point. Please help!

If you're using IE on the web, you must assume that your system was
compromised; and malware can have about any effect on your system. So why
do you wonder at all?

Sebastian, please can I ask you respectfully to consider the reality
of the browser culture available to users, and work within the current
practical, real-world limitations.

I find that your proposal that the whole world conforms to standards
which are not supported in any browser is counterproductive to
assisting users in solving their problems.

If you wish to discuss IE as a browser, I'd agree it's considerably
sub-standard. However not everybody has your capability to see the
benefits of alternate browsers, and to appreciate that limitations in
functionality are in some cases beneficial.

In other words, please take your browser war elsewhere, it's not
wanted or appropriate here - this forum is for discussion of windows
media used on the web.

Thankyou
Cheers - Neil

Sebastian, please can I ask you respectfully to consider the reality

But then you should consider the reality with of internet. IE has at least
50 unpatched critical security holes, some are even without workaround.
Exploits can be found via Google Ads or alike on almost every legitime
website and Man-In-The-Middle attacks on encrypted HTTP are trivial to
launch. Trojans like Gaobot are nearly impossible to detect, even for
professionals. Consequence: One must _reasonably_ assume that the system is
compromised when IE was used on the web.

And sure, that's a very bad thing.

Nah, it's just the matter of security. One must also reasonably assume
system compromise after using OE, Outlook, MS Office on non-trusted files,
Windows/MSN Messenger, ICQ(| Lite), mIRC, Norton stuff... and with a
compromised system you do have an probable, easily explainable but
hard-to-diagnostic vector of reason of error.

You've missed the point - which is "I don't care"**
I'm here to discuss media subjects not browser bash.

Bye,
Neil

But they relate to the problem - I you can assume that your system is
running malware, then it will also affect WMP and, if it is the cause,
obviously uselss to diagnostic. And this is a common problem.

Actually, that's a false correlation. I'm unaware of any malware that
targets WMP to not work properly in web pages, and I'm betting that you
aren't either. If you have any positive correlation (say that CoolWebSearch
variant #186 deliberately breaks WMP embedding) then there would be value in
your comments. As it stands, your comments don't actually have any
relevance.

I work with and defang malware from time to time. Your comments are simply
off-base and not helpful to the user, sorry. If there IS some relevance in
your commentary, please do share with me what malware is doing what to WMP
settings, since I would possibly need to account for that nastiness in the
future.

Regards,
-Zach

Targeting is not needed. The malware simply needs to break some system
functions, as most trojans do.

Gaobot does break about everything on network connection from time to time.

Thanks, that probably the most pointless conversation I have ever read.
While you guys are debating the security features of various internet
browsing software, I am still stuck with this problem. You all have been a
big help. Take your petty little argument somewhere else, asses!

OK mr. high-and-bloody-mighty, why dont you start by providing some
facts then :

1) Prevous verison of media player installed
2) Current version of media player installed
3) Version number of internet explorer
4) Operating system used
5) Specific websites used to test your assertion
6) How you have determined the problem is reproducible.
7) Steps to reproduce the problem (with screenshots where available)

Maybe if you can satisfactorily answer the above questions, we'll
offer targeted help. But I sure think offering only rudeness to group
users is only going to end up with an off-base response.

Thanks.
Neil
