device cues then goes into fast forward |

I have a Sony "DV Walkman" (DSR-V10P) also know as a clamshell.
In Encoder I have set up an EDL with in and out points. When I click "Start
encoding" the DSR slowly cues to the inpoint but just as its about to start
playing it drops into either fast forward or rewind. If I press stop the tape
immediately starts playing at that point and goes into encoding.
The encoding is fine (video and audio) but obviously from the wrong point.
I am using firewire to import. I have set all the options I can find to PAL
but I can't make it use in points (or to record on the fly from a cued point
with no edl). Any ideas out there?
