I have Windows Media Player 10 on all my PCs. On one of them, it only plays
the video from DVDs. There is no audio. I went into Options | DVD |
Advanced and the audio driver was Nero(!). I'm not sure how exactly got
there. Yes, I installed Nero but it shouldn't have changed my Media Player
settings. I didn't see a way in WMP10 to change my audio driver. I looked
up DVD and Advanced in WMP10's help files but there was no information on
this. So, I uninstalled Nero. Now, the DVD tab in WMP10 is gone. So, then
I went into Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs to reinstall WMP10 but
WMP10 doesn't have an entry there. So, now I am downloading and reinstalling
WMP10 from scratch.

My question is: how do you get WMP10 to play DVDs correctly?

Re-installing WMP10 from scratch did not help. I also ran Norton Utilities
WinDoctor to fix any registry errors. Also, there is still no entry in Add
or Remove Programs for WMP10.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix WMP10 so that it plays DVDs?

Evidently, there is no dvd player included in WMP10, neither in Windows XP.
You are just expected to use the software (normally) included with your dvd
drive.
When I had Windows Me (Millenium Edition) and WMP9, there used to be a
program in the windows directory called 'dvdplay.exe', namely Windows DVD
Player. I don't know whether it was part of WMP9 or part of WinMe. I suspect
the latter.

If you check the 'updates' box in your windows software list, you can find
Windows Media Player 10 under 'software updates for Windows XP'. Now you can
change your WMP back to version 9 and perhaps even remove WMP9, to reinstall.
I doubt if it helps.

If you want to be able to watch dvd's in WMP10 (obviously you do), you need
a decoder. You could try this (I haven't, but I have PowerDVD, which provides
WMP10 its decoder), perhaps it works:
change your WMP back to version 9 (through the software list), go to your
windows directory to seek 'dvdplay' - if it's there it's part of WMP9 and
you're lucky, otherwise stop - and copy it to another location (for instance
'Program Files'). Now reinstall WMP10, and go to Options to see if the DVD
tab is there. If not, you can still make a shortcut to the Windows DVD Player
on your desktop/start menu and use that instead of WMP.
Like I said, the Windows DVD Player is probably only part of Windows Me.
Nowadays, Microsoft refers people without a decoder to their decoder site,
and that are all non-free products from other companies.
Sorry I couldn't help you. Microsoft isn't, they're just making profit of
it. ;-)

Microsoft doesn't make a penny from MPEG2...
What you need is to buy a DVD player (i suggest Elecard) and you will get
all the needed decoders with it.
If you can see the video but hear no sound then what you're going to need is
just an AC3 decoder, which can be found at http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net
