Helix for streaming? |
|
|
Hey
I just wondered what you all thought about Helix (real)'s universal
streaming servers for streaming video? I'm planning on purchasing a full
licensed and hosting it on a dual AMD Opteron 64bit machine with 4gbs
of ram and tons of disk space. I've found that having too much
processing power to keep up with the number of streams and such can
never be a waste, although i've been told that it might be alittle over
board for what I need.
I've noticed that the Helix administrative console is very complex. Is
anyone here using it on Linux or FreeBSD? Its definatly going to take
some getting use to.
My plan is to start up a streaming hosting provider company using the
Helix server and Telestream's automation technology. I need to find a
good DMR that interfaces with the Helix server to provide customers with
pay-per-view and much more features for their media needs. Anyone know
any good DMRs? Any of them free? :)
thoughts/ideas?

you might want to try a group that's dedicated to Real/Helix instead of this
one from MS :) |

Nope, it's a perfectly good place to ask. Just that I can't test out
this until I do a server rebuild, and that's going to be at least next
weekend ;-))
Somebody else might be quicker in the Helix forums, its true, but the
newsgroup shouldn't be just MS specific, though a lot of people ask
for help on MS stuff in relation to other kit.
Nice answer about the distinctions between http download and mms
streaming BTW ;-)

I have toyed a bit with Helix on Windows, and found it quite easy to use,
once i've got started.
However, Helix doesn't yet support RTSP (only the MMS transport), thus using
3 times more RAM than otherwise necessary for t he same number of streams!
Performance wise the old MMS protocol is way short, so I presume your
customers will more than a little be interested in Real streaming, otherwise
an MS only solution is easyer and cheaper (today!).
DRM is supposed to be available soon in Helix (possible is already, but as
long as Microsoft still provides the stuff for free, and given the fact that
a lot of companies have gathered experience running DRM in VoD and Live
environments, you'd probably find it easier to get access to know how if you
choose MS.
If you control the end-user 100%, yoy might consider otherwise.

Oi
