Can anyone enlighten me on the gain structure of Windows mixer?

For instance, if I select Stereo Mix (whatever that means) in Windows Mixer
Recording Gontrol with the level right up, and then select Wave Mapper as
record input to Cool Edit, I get what looks like about 24dB gain, so I must
turn Stereo Mix right down to the bottom to get somewhere around 0dB - I'd
prefer some way of getting a flat zero gain signal from wave out to Cool
Edit's recording input.

And does XP resample to 48K and back without telling me? Windows mixer is
VERY crude and unhelpful, but I don't know how to leave it out of my equation.

What's the internal resolution through the inescapable Windows Mixer? How
many bits am I throwing away with the WinMix fader at the bottom to get rid
of that ludicrous amount of gain?
