There was a blind listening test there of different formats at 128 kbps.
ATRAC came in very last. I think WMA was somewhere in the middle.
Of course, it's all in the ears of the beholder, with any such test.
Everyone's hearing is different, so you should go with what sounds good to
you, with whatever trade-off for file size, depending on what kind of device
you are using, etc.
Some advantage to a blind test, however, where the participants don't know
which format they are listening to, as one's "hearing" is so easily
influenced by extraneous factors, such as what one has read about it. (And
for instance, many people would never use WMA, say it's "crap", etc., just
because Microsoft makes it.) So a blind test tells you what a group of
people heard, who didn't know which sample was which. However, that group of
people is not you, everyone hears differently, in the end you have to go
with what you hear (with whatever trade-offs for file size).
