yEnc is I suppose an encoding type for file transfer used in many newsgroups
for large media files.
I noticed most files download and play fine but the ones marked "yEnc" won't
play in Media Player.

I guess you need to unpack it first. These newsreaders support YEnc
message decoding : http://www.yenc.org/windows.htm

I use FreeAgent, which can upnack YEnc message files, although I've
never used it or even noticed it. Outlook *will* be useless for this,
as it only seems to unpack MS-approved file schemes

Your file should be unpacked to presumably a .wmv (windows media
video) file. If it isn;t its probably some other type of file eg
quicktime or real player. You'll need to use those players for those
file types.

Thanks for replying! Aha now we are getting somewhere.
I use Agent. Just bought latest version.
But it is not (by default) unpacking ... it is showing it as a bunch of
wierd text symbols and I guess not even sending it to Media Player at
all.... I'll look more thru Agent's settings to see if I can find "unpack"
settngs but I did look before....

The 'weird text symbols' is the encoded (packed) file. It's not
unpacking them by default, although the help files say it should.

Please go to the Agent 'Help' menu, and start typing YENC into the
help box. It will tell you what you need to do. If that doesn't help,
go to the search help, and type Yenc there as well, there are a few
more pages. If none of this works, you'll need to contact Forte or
look on their forums for more instructions.

Yeah I did all that and saw that sure it supports Y-enc and even
automatically and that they support it in a very "strict" way so I'm
thinking the files it doesn't decode are because they don't adhere strictly
to the same exact Y-enc encoding rules. Oh well.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me [and give great advice] about
this!
