Can WM 6.4 play Screen v9? |
|
|
Can Windows Media Player 6.4 play Windows Media Screen v9 content? I see
that Windows Media Screen v7 is in the codec install package, but can I
install v9 from somewhere?
Thanks

I'd grab this and see if it helps : Although I'm not sure if it allows
you to watch screen-capture codec video, it might be worth a try.

Ah... that didn't work. The description is VERY misleading.. I thought it
was going to do it for me.
Still get "Unable to download an appropriate decompressor" (which it
shouldn't have to do).
I can hear the audio, but see no video :(
This stinks.
Thanks anyway.

Thats slightly odd if you consider that WMP6.4 is supposed to download
those codecs unless it's blocked. The only explanation I can think of
is that it's not a WM9 codec at all but something else, such as DivX.
Did you create the WM9 screen content ?

I did. I used Camtasia Studio. I look at the properties in WMP and it
says:
In use -
Installed:
YES Windows Media Audio 9
NO Windows Media Screen 9
I just checked the settings in Camtasia Studio, and it did encode as Screen
9.
I'll try some other things, but if you have any other ideas, I'd love to
hear.
Thanks again!!

Well, let's see. There's always windows media encoder which will do
the same job as Camtasia (but it's free) ... and those codecs are
native to the encoder so I'd expect it to do a proper job, or at least
rule out some of the possible variables.
While on the subject of the encoder, I found the WME screen capture
was generally rubbish ;-p So what I did, I saved the profile (with
x-y screen coordinates) as a different profile name - This prevents
WME resetting the profile to the default screen capture settings.
Then, I changed the capture to use WMP9 VBR (variable bitrate) capture
instead, with no audio. It can be adjusted to an overall bitrate
that's damn near equal to the screen capture, to give very little
blurring. The results were much better than the screen capture codec
(no 256 colour banding) for semi-photo quality on screen graphics.
Worth a try.

The only problem is that MP 6.4 doesn't like VBR... ;-)
Also... did you try installing the WMP9 codec pack?
It's at www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia, look for codecs 101.

Even though it says it's WMP9 codec pack... it only installs Windows Media

Then you'll have to use the WMEncoder, as Zarax clarified (or Camtasia
if available) using CBR for WMP6.4 ... and use the WM9 standard rather
than screen capture codecs. Sorry, doesn't seem to be any other way to
meet all your requirements !

Thanks for all your input!! Not sure what I'm going to do yet. Maybe put
WMP9 on a single machine, and consider it a training machine, or play around
w/ re-encoding.
Again... thanks
