I run Win98SE and I have a ESS solo-1 PCI AudioDrive sound card.

For a while now, I've had some issues with media files. Firstly, my computer
would be running fine and then out of the blue, would crash when a sound
event was triggered. I noticed that this usually happened with the default
sound associated with clicking a link or submitting a form. It would also
happen often when I ran a .swf file which had sound. My computer would
freeze, the sound would judder violently for a few seconds and then the pc
would shut down. Very odd.

More recently, I noticed that when opening a media file (usually mp3, mpeg,
wmv), Windows Media Player would start up fine but nothing would play. If I
left it alone, it would eventually play as normal after about 10 minutes.
Thereafter, everything would be fine. However, if I tried to close Media
Player before waiting for it to finally start, it would crash and my whole
system would freeze.

The latest development is that the same as above happens, although no matter
how long I wait, nothing will play.

As you can imagine, this is VERY frustrating.

I am assuming that these issues are sound card related. I think I've
eliminated most other possibilities: The same problem occurs with RealPlayer,
I have reinstalled Windows Media Player, I have even installed newer drivers.

Am I missing something? Could this be hardware related?

I have tried to search the web for a sign of precedence, but I've found
nothing.

Any help would be much appreciated.
