i have a soundcard installed which hasn't given me any problems in the past
and suddenly it gives no audio plus i have the above message...any advice
would be heplful.

You have a driver issue - try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card -
either from the internet or the cd that came with it - or restore cds (which
i do not recommend)
