In win 98 I could use windows recorder to record tapes onto files on the pc
and then to cd. But with xp i cannot seem to find a way to record either
voice input or external input. Can i download the windows recorder on its
own ?

There is an Analog Recorder program that comes with the Windowsmedia
Plus Pack, or you can search the web for third-party recording tools.
More than one way to skin this cat.
