WMV files that used to play fine are now "invalid format" |

I'm using WMP 9 on OS X. I have a number of WMV files I've downloaded that
used to play correctly in WMP (I'm not streaming them; just opening them on
my hard drive). Now when I try to play them, some work, and for others I get
the "invalid file format" message. I've deleted the prefs and plist files; no
difference. I've tried running these files, WHICH USED TO PLAY JUST FINE, in
the exact same version of WMP, off a DVD I burned weeks ago, with the same
"invalid file format" result, so I know they haven't been damaged.
I did recently upgrade from OS X 10.3.5 to 10.3.6. I can't find anything
online that reports this as a problem.
I've tried these files in Mplayer and VLC. The ones that work now in WMP
also work in there. The ones that don't play anymore in WMP also don't play
in the other ones (I don't know if they worked there before--I'd never tried
them in anything other than WMP.)
Is this a codec issue? I haven't deleted any. Could the system upgrade have
removed some? How do I get them back?
Any ideas, please? Thanks.

Try deleting the pref and .plist file for WMP. It very often helps for these
weirdnesses :-\

Nah, you can't really do anything to the codecs. I really suspect it's one of
these issues with either the prefs or permissions on the drive.

Thanks, but as I said in my original question, I've already tried deleting
the prefs & plist files, and it had no effect. Also, applying Microsoft
logic, I've deleted and re-installed WMP, and restarted my Mac a few times.
No difference. Suddenly the majority of my WMV files have been rendered
unplayable. I'd be willing to blame 10.3.6 somehow, except--
I have Virtual PC, and I tried playing the files there. Same behavior -- the
ones that still worked, played fine in there. The ones that stopped being
recognized as valid formats were also invalid formats in Virtual PC on the
Windows platform.
I also wondered if it was my external Firewire drive and a known problem
with 10.3.6. But the files also don't play from a backup data DVD I made a
few weeks ago, before I upgraded.
Again, these are files that I succesfully played on this system before! I
haven't found any rhyme or reason why some of my files play, and others are
invalid -- some were from the same source. The modification dates on these
files haven't changed, and they're still the same size. Is there any software
for "fixing" corrupted WMV files???

THat's why I was thinking about the prefs. I was looking for something
that might have gotten corrupted and crippled WMP.
Did you also repair the Permissions on the drive ??? (this time I read
back and saw no refernece to permissions ;-)) ).

I don't see how it could be the files. I really think something
messed-up the player.
