I'm in the ridiculous position of not being able to get an inegrated
part of the WinXP OS working, despite following all the advice I can
find.

I am running windows xp pro, sp2, with the latest patches.

When I try run windows media player I get 'Windows media player has
encountered a problem and needs to close'. This happens whether I
launch the .exe file, or try to run an associated file type, such as
mp3 or wmv.

I have been to the MS website, and looked up the FAQS. I have
re-associated (using regsvr32) wmpui, jscript and vbscript dlls.

I have rolled back from v10 media player to v9, and then re-installed
v10.

I have repaired the XP installation using the XP installation disk.

I have checked custsat.dll.

I have re-installed all the codecs.

None of this has helped.

When I install v10, and the codecs I have to do so in safe mode, as
the system otherwise hangs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for helping.

It looks to me like the install succeeds, but then it chokes on
launching the app. From what I recall. it gets as far as the box that
asks the privacy questions, but only the outline of the box is there.

You'll see that I was installing v10 on top of the same version.

Unfortunately not. The value was already set to '1', presumably from a
previous install in safe mode.

I set the value to '0'. Launching the player then gave me the privacy
and file preferences screens, and then launched the player itself,
with the usual 'encountered a problem' message. When it does close
like this, error signature is as follows.

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3802 ModName: wmp.dll
ModVer: 10.0.0.3802 Offset: 00004ce5

It's also worth noting that the same behaviour occurs on other login
IDs on the same machine.

thanks
Nick

Then try to launch WMP again - does it work then?
