I have tried and tried to play the video clip found on this page:
<http://et.tv.yahoo.com/movies/13480/>; the video freezes shortly after
the beginning every time (the audio keeps going). I have my WMP
buffering preferences set to 99 seconds (the largest value that can be
entered). Deleting preferences did not help. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much,

Emily

I've had the same problem with another video. hopefully someone has an idea
of what's going on.

i did notice that if I encode the video in CBR instead of VBR it works fine.
not sure if this is the cause or effect.

Hi Emily,

Not really. Since I can play the video from my Mac (we have a fast
internet access) all I can suspect is a network issue. You must be
losing the feed after a while. Can you pause and re-start the video??

If I were losing the feed, wouldn't the audio stop also? The audio
portion keeps playing; the picture freezes. I can't pause the video
because the controls never appear (just a blank white space underneath
the blue status/title strip). Also, modem activity continues the entire
time as the audio plays and the picture stays frozen.

I'm on a dial-up connection (albeit a pretty good one), and I figured
out the URL for the alleged "dial-up" version of the stream
(<http://mediaframe.yahoo.com/buildlist.asp?p=tv&f=96141170&a=0,30&sid=21045119&m=wmv&r=56&l=SAV>);
*it* even freezes when put directly into WMP (Open URL...).

Yeah, that's something puzzling and I don't know enough about the way
audio and video are streamed to give you a good answer.
nevertheless, I've seen that rather often with feed from wimpy server

I would suspect that audio and video are sent on separate streams, but
that's really only a guess. Neil would probably know a lot more than I
do on this topic.

Welll only a little. But the servers - if they're streaming media
servers - are designed to progressively back off the video quality
when network bandwidth drops off for any reason at the player end.

If the video provider encoded multiple bitrates into the source video
- so if they provided say a 750k, a 250k, a 40k video+audio stream,
and a 20k audio-only stream, this would account for your observation.

If the video is coming off a web server instead, then no fallback is
possible, so some other cause would be making you lose audio (perhaps
a badly encoded file or a broken MPEG video). In general during bad
network conditions, the stream would re-buffer a lot due to the lack
of delivery fallback mechanisms.

HTH
Cheers - Neil

i actually suspect WMP is not able to render the video frames fast enough.
i've seen a similar problem on some Windows computers where WMP was set to
use the old VMR renderer. when i changed that to use the new VMR 9 renderer
the problem went away.

i don't know where that setting (if it exists) is stored on the Mac. if
someone knows let me know.
