Is this CD ROM hardware bad? or Software |
|
|
Gateway/AMD Athlon 1100/ Microsoft ME/ 256 MB RAM/ 60 gig Hard Drive/
Phillips IDE CD R/RW 8X4X32
My CD ROM drive does not work. I can open with the switch on the tower or
open with “Eject disk” command. However, when the disk tray is closed, the
LED light goes on and then nothing happens-the light stays on. I can not
confirm that the disk spins.
When I double-click from My Computer>E:\, I get the message “please insert a
disk into Drive E:”.
I have checked Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>CD ROM>Settings :
trying all possible permutations, without any change.
Should the disk be readable by MS DOS? E.g. “dir E:\” I get a not ready
Abort, Retry, Fail.
Gateway Knowledge center says there are no updates to the driver and that it
is standard with Microsoft ME.
Any suggestions?

Is the CD ROM correctly identified in the BIOS?

Jerry,
I don't know. Could you direct me on how to verify the CD ROM is correctly
indentified in the BIOS?
Thanks for your help.

Another thing to check is whether the IDE cable is plugged in properly at |
both ends. They can work loose. Make sure you don't dislodge any other
cables while checking! (If you buy a new CD rom drive you're going to have
to open the case anyway).

The owner's manual has instructions on how to get into the BIOS. The usual
procedure is to hit the <DEL> key when you first turn the computer on and
the BIOS screen should appear. BUT, some systems vary the key to be hit -
check the owner's manual.
