I am encoding a movie using mpeg-1 layer 11 for audio and mpeg-1 for
video - the file suffix is .mpg - but i can't play it back using the wmp
version 9 that i have downloaded - why? Also if i want to create an avi file
playable on both mac and pc platforms (downloaded file)
what codec would i need and where would i get this from?

Because WMP for Mac never intended to read anything else than WM files
:-\
Try simply the QuickTime player.

Since you have WMP9, I assume you are running MacOS X.
You can install the 3ivx and Divx codecs for quicktime (search
VersionTracker for the files). Additionally, I would suggest using
either MPlayer X or VLC to read DivX. These two apps are terrific DivX
players.
To create files you also have a bunch of applciations at your disposal.
I use D-Vision (free) and FFMpeg X (shareware) to create DivX (these are
encoders, not ripers :-> ).

Thankyou for that information. I am using discreet's cleaner for encoding
and can't create divx files. Although i can test all created files in quicktime
- i was hoping to check them in wmplayer. I now know they play fine in
wmp on a pc but have to get the pc user to test them for me. This is less
than ideal. Ultimately i'd like to create mp4's but know that microsoft
software can't see the ones i create, there being some kind of proprietry
issue. But Is there a way i could do this as the quality/size file of an mp4 is
superior to any other that i've found. I'm using a mac osx 10.3.4.
thanks again for your help

Cleaner does MPEG 1, 2 and 4. MPEG 4 actually shoudl give you file
pretty close to DivX compression.

You can make MPEG 1 or 2 and transcode it to DivX through one of the
apps that I mentioned in my previous post.

WMP usually doesn't care much for format it didn't originate... You
still can use QuickTime player on Windows though...
