Is there a way to clear to clear the recent files list on
WMP 9 for OS X. I'm sure the data must be stored in a file
somewhere, but I can't find it.

how do i "rash (trash?) the WMP preferences"? Where is the
file located?

Drag the file to the Trash and then go to Finder > Empty Trash.
