Yes, that's what most applications that need to install shared components
require nowadays.

Once you enter the admin password, the installer should proceed and not go
into spinning beachball mode. There must be a problem there.
I just answered a similar post about the same issue yesterday. You should try
to trash the WMP pref files (the pref file and the .plist file) and repair
permissions before you try installing again.
