WMS HTTP Server Control Protocol suggested port? |
|
|
I understand that to do a multicast i need to enable
WMS HTTP Server Control Protocol..
Further I think I know that IIS and WMS HTTP Server Control Protocol
cannot use the same port...
now since my IIS is using port 80 - This is my Q.
What would be a good port to use? does it matter?
could I use ...just any like port = 8181
and then on my encoder for the Push*
do i enter the server ipaddrss:8181
basically what would be a good port to use when I enable WMS HTTP Server
Control Protocol ... and I wish to not interfer with my webserving ( IIS )
Thanks!

Where did you get that idea? It's not accurate.

I got that idea from microsoft :

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmencode/htm/pushingastreamtoawindowsmediaserver.asp
The following requirements must be met on the Windows Media server:
HTTP must be enabled on the Windows Media server:
On the Windows Media server, in the console tree, click the server that you
want to use for this stream.
In the details pane, click the Properties tab.
In Category, click Control protocol.
Enable the WMS HTTP Server Control Protocol plug-in.

That's for pushing a stream from Windows Media Encoder to Windows Media Server
over HTTP. Has nothing to do with multicast. |

Ok, well I see what you mean... regarding how the video gets to the viewer no http is needed but -- would you agree that I DO need to enable the HTTP Server Control Protocol Plug in -- because I Do wish to Push a stream from my encoder to be broadcast via multicast... and if so can I push on a diffrent port and then what would be a good port ... and do i do that at both the server and the encoder.
|
Thanks... I can tell you really know this stuff - sorry if I was unclear ...
I just want to do the push & multicast stream without tanking the webservcies
on the windows server...
thanks again!

I've never pushed to a server from WME, but I believe what you've stated above
is correct. You can select a port in the properties for the HTTP plug-in and
then specify that port in WME as part of the URL. As for which port to use,
pick one between 1024-65535 that isn't already in use on your system. You can
find out what ports are in use by typing "netstat -an" at a command prompt.

My approach to make sure that al my clients can see my video streams as
(hopefully) any firewalls have port 80 open...
I defined 2 IP addresses at my windows server 2003 (nearly all network cards
can do that). The first IP address is used for the webpages (webserver,
C:\Inetpub) at port 80 and a second one is assigned to the windows media
service (C:\wmpub). Also port 80.
Never had any problems again with residential and business customers
firewalls ;-)
What do you think about this approach?

Interesting idea, except that more advanced firewalls (packet filters) can
filter out non-HTTP traffic on port 80, so protocols like MMS or RTSP likely
would not work. |
