I am having some customers complain of random streaming issues which I cannot
duplicate on any PC/ISP location that I have access to. They are telling me
some videos are playing fine and others do not play at all. Here is a
comparison of 2 videos info by looking at the properties in Windows Explorer.

Does not Play
Audio Bit Rate: 63kbps
Audio Sample Size: 16 bit
Channels: 2 (Stereo)
Audio sample rate: 16 kHz
Video Data Rate: 241 kbps
Video Sample Rate: 24 bit

Plays fine
Audio Bit Rate: 431 kbps
Audio Sample Size: 16 bit
Channels: 1 (mono)
Audio Sample Rate: 16 kHz
Video Data Rate: 237 kbps
Video Sample size: 24 bit

One of the major differences is that one is in stereo and the other is not.
The A/V department that is encoding these are supposed to be encoding all the
videos with MBR but by looking at the info on these 2 videos that does not
seem to be the case. Anyone have any idea as to what I can look at to try
and fix this? I am at a loss since every PC I attempt to play the file on it
works fine.

Thanks,

Jason C

You need to investigate your customers system details more concisely :
there are very rarely random problems, so normally I'd look for a
common cause.

Are they using Macs ?

Do they only have WMP7 on them (and you've encoded the files with WM9
codecs ?)

Are you embedding the videos in a web page, if so are they using IE or
Firefox or Opera or (other) to view the page ?

Thanks for those detailsd but it would also be helpful to know about
the video and audio codecs used. If you prefer to post a URL to the
video it might be easier to diagnose.

Thanks for the response Neil.

Here is what I know but I am having to rely on non technical persons to get
the answers.
Windows XP with WMP 10.

The files are encoded with WM9 Codecs.

Videos are embedded and the client is using IE 6.

Can I send you the URL to the media offline? I would rather not post it in
the newsgroup. Also, do you know of a tool or utility to grab IE and WMP
versions/settings. I know MS PSS has the MPSRPT tools but I haven't seen one
that is focused towards gathering this type of info. I would rather have the
customer run some type of script/tool to gather the software information
instead of them saying yes I am on XP and have Media Player 10 when they are
really on Win 9x with Media Player 6!

Thanks,

Jason C
