Is there a programmtic way to extract the number of channels used by a wma
encoding profile or from the encoded file?

Sorry - what do you mean "number of channels" - you mean a MBR
multiple bitrate encoded file ? Or something else... ?

as in 2 for stereo, 1 for mono, 6 for 5.1 etc...
