Hi Corentin. Thanks for trying! I think that it must be something in
my laptop, not WMP, then. Safari IS my default browser, and I tried
Firefox 1.5 too. So I think there's just something strange with
something on my end. I'm using 10.3.9 by the way. I wonder if an
update to 10.4 would help or hurt here???

Thanks again for trying!

Did you receive any help on this? I'm having the same problem

it freezes the entire program and I have to force quit to get out of
it. This happens in Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. I have
rebooted the Mac OS X, trashed and dowloaded WMP 3 times, checked for
errors, and checked the persmission on Mac OS X 10.4.3 (what the Apple
people told me to do). The freezing of the browser is making me crazy.
Can anyone help?

Yes, he did. There are 15 other replies to the message - did none of
them help, or could you not read them ?

Cheers - Neil

Just to add to this mess:
I also have the same problem, although for me it's particularly
strange because my browsers used to play streaming audio embedded in
web pages but then suddenly stopped. I cannot figure out why/what
changed but my issues are the same as everyone else on this page and
none of the replies seem to be very solid answers to the questions.
For example, I used to be able to listen to
www.bostonsprogressivetalk.com (the listen live link on the left)
without any problem. But, within the past month or so every time I try
to listen to that link or any other embedded audio I recieve this
error:
Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and
try again.
I have reinstalled windows media player a couple of times, tried
other browsers everything. In addition, often while browsing friend's
pages on myspace.com my browser will freeze if they have embedded
audio/video. This has always been a problem but has never been very
consistant (and therefore I have no link for example). In any case I
have a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.3. If anyone finds anything
please let me know!

Maybe the MIME types are not setup properly (check fromt he preferences
interfae in IE, it shows the system settings for the MIME types).
otherwise, as I mentioned before, it could be a non standard character
in the hard drive name :-\

Hi Corentin. I'm afraid I am lost again (sorry - I'm dumb). While I
think I know what you mean as to IE preferences, and where it shows the
wmp mime stuff, what do you do with this information? By the way: I
couldn't play that WWL-TV stuff with IE running either. I could listen
to the audio of the radio station Daniel mentioned though.

Hmm. could it be a problem with wmp and video only, not audio????

Hey Daniel. Ironically, I had no problem at all with your Boston file.
Came through just fine. And I like the radio station's philosophy.
Thanks for that (g)

Check that everything you need is indeed specified in there (writing it
up in IE will propagate to the System for the other browsers).
All proper supported MIME types are listed here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwmt/h
tml/mime.asp

If the MIME type is wrong in the prefs, it might not play for any app,
including IE. These types tell what to do with what type of file. If the
MIME type for these files is not telling the browser to use the WMP
plug-in, they won;t play in any browser. IE is just an easy frontend to
display and edit the information. THere are other options, but most
people still have IE so it's a convenient way to access that.

I doubt it since I can play both on my Mac.

That looks like a different issue.
Try trashing the pref file and plist. If you don;t know how to do it,
check the FAQ.

flash apps (such as the Strong Bad emails on homestarrunner.com) or any

use WMP) but they don't have sound (sorry no link for this one). I
still, however, can play ITunes or hear any songs that are played with
quicktime (such as mp3s on on websites and whatnot). Anyone have any
thoughts on this? Thanks a bunch in advance,

Do you have GarageBand ?? Can you try launchng it at least once and let
us know if it then helps ??

Well I suspect GarageBand reads teh AudioCore settings and corrects them
if they're not right.
I wish there was an easy way to do this manually.

Not so much. I use either a Mac GUI for the apps I use or straight in
command-line. I don't have any app (beside Gimp) in X11,
:-\

Pardon the last empy post.

I seem to have the same problem: When I click a link, such as a song
sample link on Amazon, the Media player window opens, but then doesn't
play. Sometimes I get the message "Cannot open the file. Verify that

I have re-downloaded the file and re-installed the app, and trashed
the preference file, but still nothing.

Same as above for me except I don't get the error message. My WMP was
working fine until I
upgraded to the newer FireFox. I also re-installed, trashed the pref file,
but I have no ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist
to toss.

It seems like when I first installed WMP I had problems and I posted on this
list, and the problems were solved. But now I can't remember what I did.

ARGHHHHH!

I'd like to be able to listen to song samples, but I refuse to buy a pc and
install WMP to do it.

HELP!
