Media Player for MacOSX unexpectedly quits after opening. |

Hello Mac OSX power users:
I just reinstalled Media Player on my new G5 iMac using OSX-Tiger.
When I try to open a .wmv file directly or when I try to open the
Windows Media Player application, it unexpectedly quits. What do I
have to do to open this app so I can set the preferences or view a
movie?.

Most comon solutions are in the FAQ.
Try that first:
- repair permissions
- trash the .plis and pref file (see FAQ for more details if you can't
find them).
- make sure you're not using any special, accented... characters in the
name of your drive.

i followed all instructions in this letter and online FAQ to no avail.
Even updated Os X 10.4.2 to 10.4.3. WMP still unexpecedly quits when
opened. Tried reinstalling WMP 9.0 for OS-X. Same problem persists.
Anyone have any other solution that might work for opening WMP and
playing a .wmv file? (Other than going back to WMP 7.0 fo OS 9 :-)

For the wmv file, you might have some luck with VLC.
For the crash on open, I was wondering: can you double-click the sample
file installed with WMP and play it ??

Try one more time trashing the prefs as I described above. It worked
for me on the second attempt. |

I am experiencing the same issue after upgrading from 10.2.8 (on which
WMP worked flawlessley) to 10.4.3 on a G4 iMac (1 GB RAM, 17 in
display), even after a reinstall of WMP 9. The answer to your query
regarding the sample file is "no", the sample .wmv file will not play.
WMP gets partway through the startup process, then fails with a 'quit
unexpectedly' message as reported by the other posters on this thread.
I would like to know if there are any users reading this thread who are
successfully using WMP Version 9 with OS X 10.4 or later.

Hello all,
After a second restart after moving the WMP prefs to trash the
application launched successfully and now appears to work normally.
Look for prefs in <users/your name/library/preferences/Windows Media
Player preferences. Move the WMP Preferences file to the trash, empty
trash and restart WMP (or double click on a WMP file).

Make sure the name of your hard drive does not have any special

Problem solved. After trashing all files with "Windows" and "Media" in
their names including all previously downloaded installers and hidden
or locked files, and repairing permissions -- I downloaded a fresh copy
of WMP, installed it and re booted. WMP now opens and works fine.
