I am not able to get Windows Media Player (v.9.00.00.3250) to play
midi files. What is the secret to doing this?
I am running Windows XP v.5.1.2600 Service Pak 2.

Does your soundcard support at least a midi software renderer?
Is the according sound interface (usually "SW-synthesizer" or "Midi") in
Volume Control enabled and with volume > 0?

The volume control in the sound interface is enabled.
In fact, I am able to play a midi file with QuckTime.

And you're sure that it's the one for midi playback? Options, Properties,
Show the following volume controls gives you an overview.

That's not comparable, as QuickTime uses its very own software renderer if
no working midi interface is present. Check the preferences to see what
renderer is actually used.

What does DirectMusic tab in dxdiag show? Ever tried to reinstall the
soundcard driver?

I checked the QuickTime preferences to see what renderer is being used
but wasn't able to figure it out, but in Preferences I checked General
Midi so that it would be the default synthesizer - it still played the
midi file..

Excuse my ignorance, but where do I find the DirectMusic tab - what is
the "dxdiag show" ?

It should be there, supposed that there's a working midi device with
DirectX support... hence, this could be the problem. The volume control is
based on VfW interface, but WMP only uses DirectShow.

You might try to autobuild a filter graph with graphedt.exe to check where
is breaks.

It's your wrong understanding of what I have written correctly? Well,
assuming that the sentence is correct, then 'show' is a verb and 'dxdiag'
is a noun. Ever tried to type "dxdiag" on Start, Run? There you should find
tab "Music" for checking DirectMusic functionality.
