I have WMP 10 running under XP MCE on an Athlon 3000+ with 1GB memory.

In the last few weeks I've noticed that when Media player is ripping CD's
The CPU usage goes through the roof.

IT starts around 65% then drops at the end of the song and goes up to 70%
for the next song, back down and then up to 75% and so on until it hits 100%
and then it just stays at 100% and takes longer to rip.

While this is happening the machine itself grinds to a halt.

Prior to this happening I used to be able to record a TV show, watch a prior
recording and rep CD's all at the same time with no discernible performance
degradation, now while ripping Audio is broken up and the machine is useless
for anything else.

I've got about 400 CD's ripped into my Library.

I'd appreciate any help on this, it's really annoying.

Cheers

Does it help if you switch to use Analog ripping?
Did you install something new or change the hardware? That sounds bizarre.
It sounds like you're getting really dirty reads from the CD drive, and the
player is spinning in circles trying to get good ones. =\
