I'm having problems playing protected files on Windows Media Player. I
tried downloading a song from the MSN website, but was met with a
prompt saying "Please click the button to upgrade your Windows Media
Player DRM installation" , but when I clicked the button, nothing
happened.

So I went to another download store, downloaded a song, and it
wouldn't play and I got the message "WMP cannot play the file because
an error occured while verifying the licence".

I've tried everything suggested on the WMP help pages to no avail. I
also tried running the latest version of WMP 10 setup from the
Microsoft website, but then I get the message "It was not possible to
complete setup. Windows Media Player was installed successfully.
However, some of your existing licences were not moved appropriately.
This might prevent you from playing some of your protected files. To
resolve the problem, try restarting your computer, and then running
Windows Media Player setup again."

Restarting doesn't seem to help. Can any one here help me with this
problem?

"protected file" and "song" are mutually exclusive.

Ever tried to install KB891122 separately?

I can't see a problem. You just proofed that WMP + DRM-nonsense + MSN Music
is a troublesome process which either results in failure or getting
frauded. Why don't you try a _serious_ online music provider like AllOfMP3?

The problem is that I can't listen to music that I've paid for!
KB891122 doesn't seem to have made any difference. AllOfMP3 looks
pretty good, but it seems that it's an American based site and I'm in
the UK.

You didn't pay for music, you paid for just some files containing data that
make no sense to anyone except to a certian trojan horse called DRM
software, and not even that is really ensured. This is fraud and you should
demand you money back.

Sure? At least that DRM update message should never reappear.

Actually it's a Russian Company. So what? As the server is in Russia, this
is the place where the trade is accounted to happen. AllOfMP3 has a legal
music distribution license there and is a very serious company.
If RIAA or <insert your local music industry lobby organisation here> is
telling you about local license binding, this has no lawful background.
Just damn lies because they don't want you to get a profit from
globalisation.

Just to let you know that I have sorted this out by using the
intructions on this webpage:

Thanks for your help. I will look into other music download providers.

AllofMP3 is based in Russia. And to get service, you'll need to send
them your CC# (Paypal is "temporarily" not offered). However, AllofMP3
uses a third-part service to handle payments; I've sent them several
payments and they've made no attempt to sock me with credit-card fraud.
