automatic codec download |

|
I have recently started testing a wm stream (encoded with Windows Media
MPEG-4 Video V3) on a Windows 98 machine with wmp 6.01.05.027 installed. When
I try to launch a stream, the external player opens, but I receive the
following message: "Windows Media Player error: Cannot open mms://.../*.asf.
Please verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."
This stream works fine on other machines with wmp 6.4 and wmp 9 installed.
Having failed to open my stream I thought I would see if it would work on
other streams. I tried a link on the
http://www.windowsmedia.com/Mediaguide/gbMovies page. The player opened and
then started to download a codec.
Now, I had always assumed that a codec download was prompted by the player
not the web page. If that is the case then the correct codec should have been
downloaded for my stream.
I guess the simple answer would be to upgrade the player. But my target
audience are not computer literate and will be put off instructions to
upgrade. However they may accept an automated codec download.
Is it possible to force an automatic codec download?
