There hasn't been an upgrade for WMP 9 in a long long time. The player works
like garbage right now-choppy playback on almost all WMV Clips.
Apparently Microsoft has no plans to make sure WMP works well on Macs. I
still have no idea why people insist on creating clips using the crappy WMV
format since MPG's are so much better, but since they do why isn't Microsoft
keeping up with the changes in OSX and making sure WMP works well?

Well there better be something coming. Something preferably with support for
DRM 10. I don't know why they can't actually make it look like its Windows
counterpart. What's wrong with MTP device support, ripping, burning, library
management, a media mall to allow purchasing of WMA files. Heck, MS doesn't
even haft to port everything. Make plugins of encoders/decoders and a license
manager that utilizes Quicktime and iTunes to decode and/or encode WMA/WMV
content, including secure'd content. Make a generic MTP app that transfers
music and video to supported WMA devices. Let's think bigger. I would make a
backend port that utilizes Quicktime and/or iTunes and adds WMA/WMV support
then do an entire new app. By doing that the decoder can work with all
Quicktime based apps, but follows secure WMA/WMV usage rules/rights. Either
way, I want secure WMA services on the Mac platform. Whether it be MSN Music,
MusicMatch, Napster. Bring MSDRM to the platform fully, Microsoft.

I'm guessing for the same reason that IE will never be managed again.

Heck I'd love an alternative to WMP, but they don't really exist.

Well using the WM codecs in QuickTime is an option (see Flip4Mac).
Unfortunately, it's not quite there yet IMVHO. That's the way to go
though since it would allow a very good integration in all other apps
that support QT.

I guess we will soon find out whether Microsoft is going to continue
supporting the Mac platform, around the time Office Mac and Virtual PC aswell
as MSN Messenger come out as Universal Binaries for the X86 and PPC Macs.
Then we'll know whether Microsoft is going to continue supporting the Mac. If
they ever release another version, it better not be CRAP like 9. It should be
fully featured. It should have DRM 9 & 10. It should be just as secure as the
Windows version in the DRM arena. The main reason, none of these other music
service like Buy Music, Movielink, Napster, CinemaNow, Virgin Digital,
MusicMatch, Wal-Mart Digital Downloads, MSN Music just to name a few, can't
support the Mac is because the DRM is either too weak or not tested. If
they're gonna take the time to port an application they should port it
correctly and a fully as reasonably possible. iTunes Mac is the same as
iTunes Windows. Quicktime Mac is the same as Quicktime Windows, except for
Video capture. Other legal music services, with the exception of RealNetworks
(because they know DRM and can modify it 10 ways from Sunday) will never make
it to the Mac unless Microsoft's Mac division starts doing their job. WMV and
WMA with MS-DRM is the biggest DRM on the Internet. If Microsoft's Mac team
worked just about as hard as Apple's Windows Team we'd just about live in a
perfect world. There is no excuse Microsoft, in their right mind, can give
me. If MS never releases another version of WMP for the Mac, the only other
digital service on the platform will be ones based on Open MagicGate (Sony
Connect) and Helix DRM (Rhapsody, Real Music Store, Movielink and Starz
On-Demand). I'm not guarentee'ing those services for the Mac, but I'm saying
they are looking at some sort of support for the Mac in the future. I don't
know about you all, but just becasue I like Apple's OS, doesn't mean I like
their one music store and 3 iPod devices, the Video, Nano, Shuffle. WMP 9 is
a joke. The video is horrible, and it's their fault. Know Why? Because I
have RealPlayer Mac and Quicktime 7 installed and it playsback just as good
as the Windows versions. This is on a G3 at 350MHZ & 16MB ATI Video. There's
no support for MS-DVR files, meaning I can't play my Media Center content
back over my network on my Mac. I swear Microsoft must have told the
developers to make a player that just barely works, good enough, to call it
WMP for OS X. I am assamed that a multi-million + dollar company would do
such a HALF-AS*** application. Apple is not that financially shining, yet
they produce both iTunes 6 Mac and iTunes 6 Windows that never change, except
in features, equally for both. Everything is in the same spot on both. I hope
someone within Microsoft's Mac division reads this post and takes this truth
to heart. If they want to have the biggest DRM in the world, and they still
want to support Office on X86 and PPC Macs, then they damn sure will want to
support the Mac with a decent version of Windows Media Player 10.

RealNetworks settled with Microsoft last week. I don't know any of the the
specifics about the deal, but RealNetworks does have access to, I guess, more
Windows Media Technologies. Theoretically, if they really wanted to invest
that much money and time on the Mac platform, they could get Windows Media
Audio, Windows Media Video and Windows Media DRM 9/10 on the Mac platform.
That's if they really really really wanted to. There are 2 services, as I've
mention in my previous post that utilize RealPlayer 10 and Real Helix DRM for
content distrobution to the public. Movielink, which independently support
RealPlayer Helix DRM (aswell as Windows Media DRM) and Starz On-Demand, which
I believe Real, themselves, deal with. Both are, of course, on the PC and I
have used them before. All Real would need to do is get their Helix DRM up to
par with the Windows versions and I believe these services could be supported
on the Mac. I have been told that Real has intentions to support Rhapsody
aswell as more RealPlayer Premium services on the Mac platform. In or for
these services to work on the Mac, they would need to improve their own DRM
system. Meaning that, someday, Movielink Pay-Per-View movie support could be
on the Mac platform. This is no crap Movie service either. This is one owned
by the big-5 studios. It requires a broadband connection, and offers just
about every new PPV movie available, like Sahara, Kung Foo Hustle and
Alexander among others. Warner Bros, Sony's Columbia, Universal, Paramount
and Lions Gate are some of the studios that offer their content. This is a
real want for me. I want first run Hollywood movies on my Mac, possibly a
Mini soon, to watch. Hollywood will not support the Mac with content until
the DRM is as good as their Windows counterparts. Whether it be Real Networks
DRM, Sony's Open MagicGate, Microsoft's Windows Media DRM, they need to come
fully and securely to the Mac. I can't believe Apple is selling Lost,
Desperate Housewives and Nightstalker in FairPlay as weak as it is. You can
make dang sure, though, that whether Blue-Ray or HD-DVD wins, Apple's
Flat-panel monitors will support the HDCP DRM protocal to negotiate and
maintain the DRM keys coming from the Mac's video cards/operating system.

Not necessarely.... they could rely on using Rosetta only and never
optimize the app. As long as it is compatible through Rosetta, they
might assume that upgrading the app is not a requirement for them... :-(
