Did you try h.264/AAC in mp4 files ?? On Windows, you'll need Real
Player, QuickTime or VLC to play them (I don't know of any solution for
WMP, but there might be one - I simply haven't explored the
possibilities).
These codecs are pretty good... You can generate the file in QuickTime
or ffmpeg X on a Mac.

Some WMV9 codecs could be recognized and played by WMP on the Mac, but
1) I'm not sure that would work 2) you still have to face the zillion
bugs this app has on MacOS X and it doesn't make it a very user friendly
solution for us Mac users.

A malformed file ?? (or an unknown codec - but I would have thought
you'd get a different warning).
How do you access the file on the Mac ?? Locally or through a web page ?

I vote for h.264/AAC MPEG4 files.
I think that's what Apple uses for the movie trailers on their site
nowadays actually.
