That's because WMP9 uses the lowest bitrate no matter what setting you
enter in the prefs.

For the later, I would suggest you check the FAQ. There are several
causes that can induce this message and a workaround for some of them is
mentioned there.

Re: WMP with OSX |

corentin thanks for your help
wish you were sitting at my machine
i'm afraid the FAQ you suggested is somewhat out of date
the advice appears to apply to 10.1.5 / 10.2 / 10.3
and i'm running TIGER 10.4.2
The still application won't install or launch at all
see copy + paste here:
repair permissions on the drive (then reboot... it can't hurt): In
MacOS X 10.2 or 10.3, you can do this through DiskUtility (located in
/Applications/Utilities). Select the boot volume and click on the
"Repair Permissions" button. For MacOS X 10.1.5, you need the
"Repair Privileges" application released by Apple for this version
of the System
i also find it impossible to follow these steps
see copy + paste here:
The file refuses to play my streaming content
Try manually downloading the .asx file (use control-click on the link).
Sometime the ASX file has a wmv extension by mistake: download it
anyway and proceed the same way. Once on your hard drive, open it in a
text editor and look for a link starting by "mms://". Copy this
link, go back in WMP and use the "Open URL" command with this link
to get your streaming content.
also the blogs are in french which i don't know how to translate
i've done almost everything i see recommended on these forums
and still can't resolve the problem
except run garageband because i don't own it
flip4mac doesn't do the trick either
i trashed everything + re-downloaded too
so i still can't open or run WMP 9.0.0 for MAC OSX on my machine
because i still keep getting the same error messages
it's funny because the demo download works just fine
any other ideas appreciated
talk about frustrating

It's all the same. No difference in this regard. Tiger introduced some
additional concerns but none of them are relevant in this context.
One of the main concerns is that Tiger doesn't come with Stuffit
Expander anymore, so people who don;t have it and need to download and
install the app will also have to install the latest version of Stuffit
Expander.

Well Tiger is the saem as Panther in this case. Repair Permissions is
right there in Disk Utility,

Well again, Tiger and Panther are not different in this regard. To
download the file you can control-clik the link to it and edit the
sources in whatever application you like most (I recommend TextWrangler
- free).

:-) Most relevant posts are in both French and English. The ones only in
French are about localisation of apps in French (which, I suspect, you
couldn't care less about) or problems relevant to the French version of
Office,

That's for a sound issue. I don't think you should really worry about
this at this point.
If the app crashes frequently, I recommend trashing the prefs and plist
then repairing permissions and rebooting.

Well if the demo works fine, then it most probably is a malformed .asx
file (or one WMP doesn't understand). The only workaround I know is to
edit the sources of this .asx file and "streal" the mms:// link from
there. Do you have an example you could give me so that I could give it
a try ??

it took some time but i located the WMP prefs + plist
and will trash them as per your instructions
even though apple advises against it.
i will take the other steps you advised but only if you can tell me
step by step exactly how to proceed with what you described the other
day
because i have nowhere near the technical knowledge of anybody else
within this group. you said the following:

yes one of the many websites i have problems with where there are WMP
files:

see the MULTIMEDIA column
then WMP below each story
thanks again

No need to worry about this. I troes the links you mentioned and the
workaround does not apply in your case.
Make sure you use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your drive, then
double-check that there is no psecial character in the name of the hard
drive (eg: accented letters).

OK there is hope. They use WMV 9.0 for video and WMA 9.1 for audio. They
are both supported nand I have no problem playing the files. I click on
the links and WMP simply opens and starts playing.
