Just the other day wmp was allowing me to search for songs and play them and all of the sudden it keeps coming up with that error and ive checked my protocol and proxy settings.. Can you help me with this problem?

Are you sure about the file type ? Is it posssible its not one of the
ones windows media is designed to play ? What's the file extension ?
