WMP 10 quits unexpectedly in OS X |
|
|
Hi all
I downloaded and installed the new Windows Media Player on my Mac running OS
10.4.2
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times but the player won't even
open. I tired dragging .wmv files to the app icon and it also quits
unexpectedly. I would seek out an older version and call it a day but I
thought I'd tap the knowledge out thee first.
Any sugggestions? I'm sorry to all you Microsoft employees for saying this
but microsofty products seem to have these issues from the get-go. On top of
that, their media format dominates the market and therefore I must be able to
view it (for business etc.)
Alternatively, is there a way to open .wmv files in another app or convert
them to something else (mpeg etc.)
Thanks
Geoff

You mean WMP 9 I guess... (?)

Check the FAQ if you need details, but basically, trash the .plist and
pref file for the app, repair permissions and make sure your hard drive
does not have any special or accented character in its name. That
usually does the trick for what you describe.

I haven't seen anyone from MS in this group in years...

Sure. Depending on the codec used, you can use apps like FFMPeg X to
transcode them to something else. You can also use the Flip4Mac
QuickTime codecs (the coding ones) to do the same thing.
Not all WM codecs are supported though.

Don't know if this may help, but I often use the excellent shareware VLC
(VideoLANViewer) program to open some of those more difficult media
files. Worth a try.

I've had exactly the same problem - as soon as I try to open WMP
directly or try to double-click a WMP file, I get the message that it
has unexpectedly quit. I just upgraded my G4 (running OS 10.3.9) to a
G5 (running OS 10.4.2, and I also attempted to upgrade WMP to v9. I
guess THAT was a mistake.

I tried all these suggestions with no success (also rebooting after the
processes).
I would just as soon give up, but there are occasions that I need WMP
(especially Internet-connected). Surely there are more than just Geoff
and me who have experienced this problem. This is frustrating,
especially since I'm such a Mac-fan and I'm having to get on my knees
for a PC application. Whew!
I've just joined this Google thing, so I might not reliably keep
checking back for an answer. Would the solver of this problem be so
kind as to send a copy of whatever response is submitted to:
jim@barkerductions.com
I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
