i am using encoder 9, I am attempting to convert an MPEG
file to an ASF file, however i am not finding anything
that will do that for me. Only converts to WMV. Does
anyone know of any software that will convert to ASF true
streaming file. I need it ASAP.

Please don't post multiple replies to your own question, it doesn't
increase the google page rank or anything.

WMV is exactly equivalent to ASF (which is the old file extension for
WMV and WMA). The content is exactly the same.

Just rename the file to ASF and it will be fine.

I apologize, but i forgot to add my email address to the
first message. However, the asf file would be a smaller
file, while the wmv file is a large file. Even as I
change the extension, it does not change the file size. I
was using a software called Moviestar to convert, but the
quality of the conversion was not very good. It converted
to asf and ram. That is what i am looking for, because a
large file works on dsl or cable modem but not on a 56k
modem.

The file format doesn't change the file size unless the encoding
(compression) settings are also changed.

Never heard of it. Do you have the original uncompressed files ? Try
using windows media encoder if you need to convert to .wmv, there are
a large number of options to adjust the compression, resizing and
cropping as well as audio conversion and so on. It's made by M$ you
know, so it ought to work pretty well for their own formats ;-)

..ram is a real player file format, let's call it a playlist. The
corresponding file type for windows media would end in .asx

It is unrelated to .asf which is a microsoft file format for audio and
video content. The corresponding real player forma would end in .ra
(audio) or .rm (video +/- audio)

Try to encode down to below 42k, mostly ~39k for use on 56k dialup
modems as they can't all sustain much aboue 40k even in good
conditions. The windows media encoder has a wizzrd to help you get the
settings off to a good start although they can be improved on.

Check the dropdown at http://tinyurl.com/7wf8
