I spent a couple of weeks trying to get WMP to play one particular
site's files and had zero luck, even with help from this forum ...

I downloaded, redownloaded, tried other software, etc ... nothing
worked.

My original problem was I could play SOME WMP files, but not a
particular site I needed for work. That site's IT was no help, etc., a
friend of mine ran it on her Mac and had the same problem,, all my DOS
friends had no problem, and the company said one of their people could
run it on a Mac (something I was sceptical about, but whatever)

THE FIX

By accident I double-clicked on the video file's address in Explorer's
pulldown <Windows/History> and TA-DAH the WMP file automatically
played ... I did it a bunch of times on two different files and it
worked every time (I did have a sort of no response to the clicking
once, but ...)

I have no idea why this worked ... but give it a try ...

And thanks to any who tried to help me

were you able to play the files from other browsers ??
Would you have an link I could try for a stream that wouldn't play
unless you did that ??
Thanks,

Corentin

Click through and YOU should get the video ... these are the two that
were driving me crazy (and I could get the Honda motor video from the
same page, no problem). These wouldn't work in Quick Time either ...

Most of the time WMP files will fire up right away. If they don't I
usually can paste the URL into the "Get URL" function (or whatever it's
called) and that works ... NOTHING worked with these two files...or any
other files on this site ... obviously a MAC/DOS thingee with this
site, but lucky I found a way around it ...

Being I work for the site it was kinda necessary, etc., etc., et al ...

Thanks for your original attempts at help ... and sorry I didn't get
back till now ...

:-\ It might be related to the way the site manages authentication. I
can't see these videos since I'd have to be a member. I suspect they use
authentication through Cookies and that there's something buggy in WMP
preventing the proper authentication and accessibility of the file.
It might be related to the HTTP 1.0/1.1 bug in WMP.

It can't work with the file since the server first has to identify you
as a registered user of the site before it actually sends the file. WMP
won't directly support that and you need to access the videos through a
browser.
I'm not sure a lot could be done on the server side.
