I have downloaded a number of Windows Media Player files using Limewire Pro
recently none of them will run. I am running Tiger maybe thats my problem. I
would be interested in hearing of a fix if someone knows of one. I even
reinstalled Windows Media Player 9. I get a black screen no sound but acts
like it was playing a file.

Tiger (10.4.x) breaks the Windows Media Player.
Microsoft hasn't updated WMP for a few years, as doesn't seem to have any
plans for new versions.

Tiger does not break anything. I have WMP running on 5 Mac here all
under 10.4.2 so that's not the problem.
The problem is that the app is pretty sensitive to mostly everything so
the slightest modification to the system might break it. I would trash
all traces of the app (including pref file and .plist) repair
permissions and reinstall it from there,

I've already tried EVERYTHING about trashing preferences, repairing
permissions and reinstalling. Nothing seems to work. I can't play any
files, I always get a "streaming typer not recognized" message. And
when it comes to streaming it's even worse, always, the same: "error
creating unique tmp file"
After 2 weeks of reinstalling, repairing, rebooting and etc I decided
to try Flip4Mac. The idea is great and Quicktime is a lot better than
WMP, but it only solved my problem at playing my files, stored in my
Mac. I can't get it to stream content from any site. The plugin
appears, but nothing happens!
Already downloaded VLC, too, but as far as I understood it won't be of
any use for streaming as a plugin, either.
I know entering the URL from the players is helpful sometimes, but it's
useless when trying to watch most movies, when is impossible to know
the address.
This problem only started when I installed the 10.4.2 upgrade. There's
another Mac in the house, running 10.4.1 and WMP is working pretty
fine.
Anyone having the same problem even after repairing and all that stuff?
Any ideas??? Please, using WMP is very important for my work.

The error creatin a unique temp file could be a permission issue (the
folders in ~/ are not repaired by Repairing permissions).
For the other one, it could be a poorly aprsed .asx file. You could try
editing the file in a text editor and copying the mms:// link directly
in the Open URL command in WMP itself.

There is also the problem of "special" characters in the drive name or
the path to the application....

Yeah Flip4Mac is not quite there yet. I tried it as well but the demo
version did not convince me it was time to acquire a license. The
plug-in fails on various rather common formats and it looks like the
installer doesn't even attempt to set the proper MIME types for it's
plug-in. I went on their support site a couple of time but I was not
really happy with the answers they were giving.

Nope, but again, you can try using the mms:// link there too since the
app has streaming capacities. The limitation is that VLC doesn't support
most of the recent WMP codecs :-\
(not their fault: the specifications aren't public as far as I heard).

Quite true... I have'nt had the problem too often though since most
recent moveis are DRM7-protected and therefore incompatible with WMP for
Mac.
Are the movies accessible through https ??? That could be a serious
issue too since WMP almost always fails on https :-|

The problem is that I don't see the problem on the several Mac we have
here (all running 10.4.2). It s therefore verydifficult for me to find a
solution.

Not even (or maybe with some specific types of streaming). I exclusively
stream files. I don't have any file in Windows Media format (and when I
do I convert them to something alse as fast as I can).

Hi, Corentin, thanks for your patience!!
Well, I don't know what else to do.. Today I've tried my last show,
doing an erase and install of Tiger.
I rapired the disk, repaired the permissions before installing WMP, and
after, and reinitialized the system, performing a new repair
permissions.
Then I opened up Safari, and again got: ERROR CREATING UNIQUE TMP file.
Besides WMP I had only installed Office. Can this be the problem?????
I should really give up WMP... but streaming the content I create for a
music website is so important that I'm afraid I'll end up giving up my
Mac, sadly.
WMP cannot stream or play local files.
If it tells something, I have a G4 1Ghz iMac 17" Flat Panel 768 RAM,
original system was Mac OS X 10.2. Upgraded to Tiger in June and after
10.4.2 WMP never worked anymore.
HELP!!

You are a genious!!!!!! Will you marry me? Although I must warn that
I've found myself to be really stupid... The fact is that I'm
Brazilian, and I gave my HD a name in Portuguese, with an accent
character!
WMP is working fine now.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Have you tried mplayer? see http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/ and
www.mplayerhq.hu

It looks like the main mplyaer website has taken over the work at
mplayerosx. (i.e. the version at www.mplayerhq.hu is newer).

I beleive mplayer will play WMP files. It will also play RealAudio 9
files (but you may need to download the codecs at the www.mplayerhq.hu
website).
