Hi all,

Can you please tell me if it is possible to get a W2K3 server running
Windows Media Server to pull live video from an HTTP source and broadcast it
from the server as a stream? I know that this is possible on VLC media
server but would prefer to be able to use a GUI (remote desktop).

The problem is that we have a client with a webcam who wants to stream live
video on their website - they have a webcam with built-in HTTP server but
their upstream bandwidth is limited so we would like to have a remote server
which pulls the video feed and then broadcasts it on its higher bandwidth
connection.

If anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful.

Thanks,

- Chris

Windows media server can pull an http feed, but it has to be a windows media
stream-able format. Usually these stand alone web cams have some proprietary
way of streaming a video feed, java applet or refreshing images or the like –
but they are not windows media streams.

If anyone has done this I’m interested to know what type of camera it was.

Hi Moshe,

Thanks for your reply.

The camera we're streaming from has a direct ASF stream. It is a Linksys
WVC54G:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1115416829859&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

I have used a couple of these are they are very reliable and functional,
both with wireless and wired network connections. Also has audio built-in
which makes it very attractive.

I contacted Axis about a camera solution which links to a Windows Media
Server and they didn't have anything to offer. It is quite surprising that
this kind of thing has not been done more often.

So, anyhow, the camera has an ASF file which it streams so am I right in
saying that there would be an option in Windows Media Server to enter the URL
to the ASF feed and then it would be possible for our site visitors to
connect to the Windows server and get the webcam broadcast from the server?
Thus this would avoid multiple connections to the webcam (which is the
problem due to ADSL upstream bandwidth limitations).

Thanks!

- Chris

I’d be happy to test it for you if you can put your feed online. Contact me
with the info: m0sheberg at h0tmail dot c0m (replace 0’s for o’s)

Our test did not work, WM server could not get the stream. I tried using
helix server but that didn’t work either.

If anyone knows of a stand alone cam that can feed to a wm server please
advise.

Thanks.

I have the same type of question. Except I want to know if I pull the video from a unicast (MMS protocol) source.

It's not a protocol issue, what's important is that the stream is a windows
media format stream.

I don't think so, you can pull from an encoder or a server but the source has
to be http://server/path

Looking into the same setup for a client, it would be great to know if this
worked before buying the camera, but I'm taking a leap.
The camera I'm looking at is the AXIS 225FD, which states it can handle 20
simultanius connections, but would rather offer the streams from a server.

If anyone has done this yet, Id be happy to hear about it.
