Please help me!

Whenever I try to click on a video to watch on a website, it either won't
play or plays for a few seconds and stops, along with an Internet Explorer
error message in a new window:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

Then I send an error report but it doesn't do anything. Yesterday, it froze
the whole webpage when I tried to watch a video, and then I sent an error
report and got this message when I clicked for more details:

"Remove the software that caused the problem

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

IBIS Toolbar created by iDownload.com.

Warning: This program shows advertisements (such as pop-ups), collects data
about you, or changes settings on your PC and does one or more of the
following:

Installs without notifying you of the features above
Does not provide information (or provides incomplete or inaccurate
information) about its publisher
Does not provide you with a way to stop it from running
To learn more about this type of software, please visit the Microsoft
Security website.

To Remove IBIS Toolbar:

Click Start and then click Control Panel.
Click Add or Remove Programs.
In Category View, click Remove a program. (If you use Classic View, go to
step 4.)
In the list of installed programs, select IBIS Toolbar and then click Remove
or Change/Remove.
Note: If the program does not appear in Add or Remove Programs, you might
need to remove it using one of the automated tools listed below.

To attempt to remove this program and any similar programs that might be
installed on your computer, you may download and run one of these free tools:

Microsoft
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)
Third-Party Security Partner Tools
Spybot Search & Destroy (S&D)
Lavasoft Ad-aware
Note: Microsoft is not responsible for the quality, performance, or
reliability of third-party tools."

I tried searching for IBIS Toolbar after finding that it wasn't in my list
of programs to add or remove from my control panel. I then used my
AntiSpyware but found no threats. I also used AntiSpyware to look for
toolbars that may cause problems and deleted one that was a potential threat,
and I also deleted Eyetide Toolbar, which has pop-up blocker (I saw on
i-Download.com that Pop-up blocker is one of their programs, but now I
realize I must have a different pop-up blocker because I never paid for one
from there) but it still shows up when I go back to check with AntiSpyware.
I also deleted the Eyetide folder where it is in my Program Files, and turned
off pop-up blocker.....and now turned it back on after seeing that none of
this worked!

If someone knows how to help me PLEASE I would really appreciate your
kindness. I just want to be able to watch videos on websites again with
Windows Media Player (by the way the video files on my computer play fine
with WMP)!

Your system has beend compromised. The only way to clean it is to flatten
and rebuild. Then think about a real security concept, including not
misusing IE as a webbrowser.

What do you mean flatten and rebuild? Re-install internet explorer or what?
And I do have internet security.....and not misuse internet explorer as a
browser - what do you mean by that?? I haven't misused it at all. It's just
that video files like on MTV.com or Launch.com, for example, won't show up.

Backup your files, format the disk (including rewrite of the MBR),
reinstall Windows, reinstall all your program from trusted media, playback
your files and check those that might contain program code.

And you should rethink about it. Obviously, it failed somewhere.
And your trial of fixing the problem using some removal tools is just bare
hope, but nothing reliable, with leaves your understanding of security
questionable.

and not misuse internet explorer as a browser - what do you mean by that??

To date Internet Explorer has 82 unpatched security vulnerabilites, and
Microsoft isn't willing to patch them. Some of them even can't be defeated
by totally locking down IE to unusability.

In fact, we know that IE was never designed with security in mind, it's so
flawed that it would be needed to be rewritten from the scratch at most
places - and no, IE7 has all those security holes still in there.

In modern times, not just professionals do work at your ISP, but also
little jerks, students, the son of the boss are all other kind of boring
people - so you also must assume that they're running Man-In-The-Middle
attacks on unencrypted HTTP sessions (because, for example, Mr. Spammerking
is paying them to infect computers). It's trivial to insert any exploit for
one of those many security holes - and therefore, the following is valid:
If you ever use IE on the internet, you must assume that your system was
compromised. Therefore, it's unusable as a webbrowser for any sane user.

So it's quite easy: If you use it, you misuse it.

It's just that video files like on MTV.com or Launch.com,
for example, won't show up.

Then it's those websites' problems. Just leave them by.
However, one can use clients scripts (user-scripts in Opera, Greasemonkey
on Firefox) or rewriting rules on a local HTTP proxy (Privoxy, Proxomitron)
to fix those defective sites*.
Clearly, you can also run IE within a virtual machine (VMware, Virtual PC).

* Well, mtv.com can't be fixed, as they're not offering any playable
content (unless you're willing to run that trojan horse called WMDRM).

Thanks Sebastian but that wasn't very helpful. There has to be some easier
way to fix this porblem rather than backup ALL of my files and reinstall
windows and everything. Thanks for taking out time to help, but I think I'll
keep searching for another way to fix this.

There are easier ways, but none of them is reliable just to the littlest
extend, and, with today's malware, are non-successful in most cases. Even
some Microsoft professionals do know that and explicitely state it, against
the usual company's propaganda.

<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/secmgmt/sm0504.mspx>

And exactly because "flatten and rebuild " is so time-consuming, the only
real security strategy is to avoid running any malware at all in first
place. When using reliable software (those, which are not regularly
mentioned for very bad security holes, missing patches for long-time known
holes or insecure design) and common-sense this actually works and is no
more complicated then trying to get along with
impossible-to-correctly-configure pseudo-security vaporware.
My Windows 2000 box is running since 1999 without any troubles, besides
dying hardware. The about 100 Windows XP boxes at one of our supported
companies are running since 2002, besides dying hardware, and without any
reak troubles. No virus scanner, no pseudo-firewall, no
anti-spyware-or-whatsoever, just using NT's security model (restricted user
accounts, file access permission, Software Restriction Policies) and a set
of sane software.

Well, the other real alternatives are just the same way: You can also bring
back a system to a well-defined state if you have a surely uncompromised
comparison system, which means either a full image backup or, more
preferable, a list of checksums of all files (for /r %i in (*.*) do sha1sum
"%i">>checksums.txt). Then you can detect and properly remove the
modification, except for some hard-to-compare files like the Windows
registry. But I don't assume that you have such a comparison thing either.

BTW, would you also please read a bit about how to quote correctly? :-)
