You're talking about the WMP plugin?
Why don't you simply type "about:plugings" into your address bar or take a
look at the webbrowser's MIME config?
There you can clearly see:
application/asx
video/x-ms-asf-plugin
application/x-mplayer2
video/x-ms-asf
video/x-ms-wm
audio/x-ms-wma
audio/x-ms-wax
video/x-ms-wmv
video/x-ms-wvx

WMP supports application/x-mplayer2, therefore can support .mov indirectly
when a sufficient media splitter flitter and decoder filter is installed,
for example with QuickTime Alternative package. Unfortunately the default
config doesn't support this, but QT and QT Alternative do install their
very own plugins that definitely handles video/quicktime directly.
Why do you bother? Normally you don't and can't explicitely specify which
plugin handles a media object, but this is to be determined by the
webbrowser. You can however detect the absence of a matching plugin easily:
<object ...>This part is only interpreted if no plugin can be found to
handle the content.
