Despite having asked my ISP to come check the cable modem connection 3 times
and tried with all browsers available (IE, Firefox and Safari), I still get
choppy video from CNN's website, as if the connection wasn't quick enough.
The strange part is that other media players (i.e. Quicktime) show seamless
video even on high definition feeds. That makes me believe there should be a
problem with Mac OS X and Windows Media Player (CNN.com's default player), I
already wrote to CNN.com's support and suggested them to serve video for
Quicktime also. Do you happen to know if there is a workaround for this
issue? I sent this message also to Apple to check if they have an answer for
this problem which surely affects all Mac Windows Media Player users.

According to the Windows Media Player 8 FAQ on Corentin Cras-Méneur's site:
<http://www.cortig.net/wordpress/?page_id=30>

"I selected a high speed connection in the WMP preferences but for some
reason I only manage to get the lowest bitrate streaming:

It¹s a known bug of the current version. The only workaround I know is to
use the trick mentioned in the previous topic to edit the .asx file and copy
the link for the bitrate you want, then use it in the Open URL command in
WMP itself."

Yeah, no matter what you set in the prefs, WMP picks up the lowest
bitrate available in the .asx file by default. As I was saying, the only
workaround is to edit the file, pick up the one you want and use Open
URL with the proper link to force WMP to use it :-(
