Ok, so this question has been answered with "look at the faq's", or
"look at this forum". I've looked at the faq's and the different
forums and the answer is not there, hence why I'm here. So here goes-
in WMP10 when I sort by album, it doesn't get the track order correct.
For the most part, if it is by the same artist then it does fine. Yet
for albums with different artists per track- like DJ mixes (the bulk of
my albums), movie soundtracks, or compilation albums- it fails
miserably and sorts it by artist instead, which means track 15 is
first, track 8 is next, or whatnot. I've went into each individual
song and double-checked their properties and made the track numbers
correct. I've also re-ordered the folder in the order of the cd and
re-added the folder to WMP, and this doesn't work. So, without
pointing me elsewhere, please answer this question straight- how do I
sort my albums by track number?

Thanks for your time,
Nick

I had the same problem when I first tried WMP10 many months ago. I
eventually gave up and rolled back to WMP9. I'd like to upgrade to WMP10,
but I want to make sure the problem has a solution. Did you ever figure out
how to fix it?

Thanks.

It's not the answer I wanted to hear, but at least it's an answer.

Thanks for the help!

If you click any column header (except in static playlists) then the
view is sorted by that column. Just like Explorer, Outlook etc.

There are two easy ways. One is to simply add them in the Track column
(which has no title, and is usually the leftmost column), and the other
is to use the Advanced Tag Editor.

If you have typed it into the filename, then one of the myriad tag
editors out there may be able to read it from your file naming schema so
you can do a bulk update.

WMP is a database view of the file system. The filesystem ordering has
no bearing on any view of WMP except for the File Name and File Path fields.

Thanks Mike.

I've given up and started to add track numbers to my 3000 files without
track numbers.

I was pretty methodical when I first named the tracks, so I should be able
to bulk update one album at a time using a tag editor. (20 tracks at a time
is better than 1 track at a time.)

It just galls me that there's not a better way to do it. What worked in
WMP9 should work in WMP10. I guess I'm just too set in my ways.

Thanks again,
Mike

I'm still mystified as to how you have been attempting to add track
numbers thus far (aside from the file names).

AFAICT there is no change. Typing in the track field has always worked
for me, although the auto-complete feature is complete rubbish for this
field and just slows you down.

I tried the "get album info"... uh... "feature", but that was really
tedious. From the library view, you can click where the track number should
be and manually enter in the number. I did this a few times to see if it
would fix the playlist order problem. Adding track numbers seemed to fix the
problem, so I found an ID3 tag editor that could assign ID3 info in batches
based on the file name. I've been working on updating ever since.

I was referring to the track order in the "now playing" pane when you select
an automatically generated album. In WMP9, in the absence of a track number
in the ID3 tag, the list would be sorted by file name.

In WMP10, that is not the case. When there is no track number in the ID3
tag, it sorts by some method incomprehensible to me. If I want those tracks
to be displayed in the proper order, I have to either add track numbers to
the ID3 tag OR select "now playing">"sort...">"by file name" every time I
pick a new album.
