Can WMP10 transcode protected music? |

I just bought an Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone. One reason I bought it was
because it has WMP10 mobile, and can play DRM protected music. I've bought
nearly 20 hours of music from MSN Music. The problem is that it's all
160Kbps. I'm about a week away to recieving my 512MB mini-SD card, and I have
a quick questin:
While syncing, will WMP10 transcode my 160Kbps DRM protected WMA's to a more
suitable 64Kbps or 128Kbps, or will the setting only work for non-protected
music?
I feel this is a SERIOUS problem if it only works for non-protected music.
160Kbps cuts about 4 hours of available music compared to 128Kbps and nearly
12 hours of available music compared to 64Kbps.
If it doesn't work, I guess the only solution is to burn every song (lots of
wasted CDs!) and re-rip them (lossy -> lossless -> lossy degrades audio!).

If it worked easily on protected music then I think folks who license
the music would feel short-changed. They hold the aces at present.

Well, I'm not saying that transcoding it would remove the DRM, it would
simply take down the quality.
Is there anyway to burn to an emulated drive an rip from there so I don't
have so many wasted disks?

Possibly - forgot to suggest that - but it's probably going to depend on
particular abilities of your burning software. |
