Hardware recommendations |

Hello,
I am about to get into encoding and producing windows steaming media files
and I was hoping to get some suggestions on requirements and type of hardware
you all would recommend. Can anybody suggest minimum CPU, Ram, Video Card,
Hard Drive, and anything else that would allow me to work with as little
limitations/trouble as possible? I will be encoding from Mini-DV 60 and 90
minutes tapes and standard VHS mostly.
Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

From the Mini-DV side, make sure you use Firewire to import the files. You
will need an analog capture card for the VHS (unless you dub to Mini-DV
first). Best bet on capture card is Osprey (www.viewcast.com).
Hardware wise, it depends on if you are going to edit or just capture and
compress.
If just cap and compress then I would use the following:
P4 3.0 Ghz Hyperthread, 800 mHz bus.
Dual DDR RAM - 1GB PC3200 (ECC if you can afford)
Two HDD's (One for the OS and the other for Video Capture). I like the WD
SATA 10,000 RPM drives but they are limited in storage (74GB is the largest).
Video card should be AGP and support DirectX9. ATI seems to be a good
choice. I am running ATI 9600xt cards.
Sound card I use is SB Audigy ES
OS is WinXP Pro SP2
Limit what the system is doing during compression (i.e. no virus scan, or
other tsr's).
If you are building an edit station than this suggestion changes so post a
reply if you are or email me at marc@melkonian.net.
Just priced out a system on NewEgg.com for about 1300 + Shipping.
Take care.
